On February 20, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the resolution 'On Independence Day of Ukraine,' in which it was stated:

To consider the day of August 24 as the Independence Day of Ukraine and to annually celebrate it as the state national holiday of Ukraine.
To consider the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR 'On the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine' dated July 16, 1990, as null and void.
